Lands Beyond

The Art of Beth Garner

Lands Beyond is an exploration of Edinburgh-based artist Beth Garner's inspirations. In 2021 and 2022, as the world went through a very unusual succession of lockdowns, social restrictions and reopenings, Beth sought to find artistic sense in the new paradigm of a post-pandemic world. Edinburgh's landscapes, its nature and the sea play an important role on her reflexions. With repeated visits to Portobello and Holyrood Park, every day brings the familiar under a new light. As time flows, Beth's style develops into an almost abstract representation of these daily sights, as well as of the mental landscapes of what lies in all the lands beyond.

Travel Documentaries

Alba.Voyage - French-speaking travel channel

Created in 2020, in the midst of uncertain time, the Alba.Voyage channel aimed to provide a way to explore Scotland for anyone who could not travel. Using my background as a trained tour guide, I wrote, planned, filmed and edited travel journals like "Carnets d'Ecosse" and documentaries / tours such as "Holyrood & le Siège d'Arthur". Both, amongst other videos, were shot in the style of popular TV documentaries, and all garnered substantial view counts on platforms such as Youtube.

Hashtag Scotland

How is social media changing the way we travel in #Scotland?

This joint project with Scottish blogger Laura Anne Brown (Hill & Harr, formerly Laretour), aimed to document the popular social-media-centered approach to travel and its impact in Scotland. Laura and I, over numerous conversations, came to question our reliance on algorithms in making travel plans, and their tendency to guide, if not dictate, what places meant: dots on a map, to be collected, rushing by natural landscapes that are equally worthy of exploration. Can we take a step back and reflect, relax, unwind, if we are constantly rushing to popular hotspots? Is “making the most of it” the best way to discover a destination?
